Inadequate? Over-Stretched? On The Way Out?
Is your payroll really up to scratch? Can it cope with constantly changing legislation? Produce top calibre management reports? Interface with general ledger, human resources and other internal systems? Or is it just creaking along, ever reliant on the IT department or constrained by outdated PC software?
Don't despair, ACT NOW and give your payroll the health check it deserves.
- Is the system straightforward and easy to update? Can it keep pace with the ever-increasing burden of statutory change?
- Payroll may be a low priority for the IT department. Does this present problems? And how quickly is it able to react to changes such as corporate policy reviews, or new union agreements.
- Is there sufficient flexibility built into the system? What if there is an increase in employee numbers following an acquisition, perhaps? How would it cope?
- Management reports are vital to modern business practice. Is your present system completely efficient? Or is the reporting procedure cumbersome, difficult, or even non-existent?
- What about year-end reports - P35, P60, P11Ds. Do these take up too much time? Or cause problems?
- All systems are vulnerable. Is there a proper back up in place and a full disaster recovery programme?
- What about security? Are you completely certain that total confidentiality is maintained at all times?
- Is the payroll able to interface smoothly with other internal systems - such as time and attendance, general ledger and human resources?
- Does it offer the capability to be used across different operating platforms - from a PC to a network/server, perhaps?
- Does the payroll enable you to split payments to different cost centres and/or department? (Too often this calls for time-consuming manual calculations).
- Is the system fast enough to process the payroll speedily? Because many other applications may be in use simultaneously, payroll software run on a network can be extremely slow, as it can on an antiquated PC.
- How much does it cost to run the payroll? Add up all the related costs - systems use, software, human resources, office space, etc - to evaluate whether it really makes economic sense.
- Payroll is often allocated to a staff member whose actual job is entirely unrelated. Is this the most cost-efficient way to deploy their resources?
- Would payroll processing by a specialist bureau be a more effective solution? Compare costs, ask for references and evaluate levels of services.
